Powell Avenue Steam Plant closed for preconstruction

The Powell Avenue Steam Plant has been closed for pre-construction work on a new development that will involve the historic structure.

Alabama Power, the plant's owner, gave the media one last tour through the property on Wednesday before shutting down access to the facility to stabilize the structure.

Located between 18 th and 19 th Streets S. near Railroad Park, plans to develop the old steam plant were announced in July.

Alabama Power still has not released final plans for the facility, but initial renderings showed a mix-use development that could include retail and cultural attractions.

“We are committed to restoring Powell Avenue for the benefit of the community and for the benefit of the region,” Alabama Power CEO Mark Crosswhite said in July.

Alabama Power has said the site has much potential and could be an economic development catalyst for an already booming area of town.

The steam plant would be located near the park and Regions Field.

Corporate Realty is also redeveloping the former Merita Bakery site for office and retail in the Parkside district.

Multiple apartment projects, totaling over 500 units, are already out of the ground around Railroad Park. When the Powell Avenue announcement was made, the developers said multifamily was not going to be a part of the project.

Alabama Power has not decided on anything definite for the Powell Avenue Steam Plant, but they have said on a number of occasions the intent is to save the 117 year-old steam plant.
